JANET HEURING LARSEN, MA, LCAS, LPA, HSP-PA, CCTP

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

​

 Janet Heuring Larsen has been providing mental and behavioral health treatment services in the community for over 17 years. At her practice, Athena Psychological Services, she provides psychological assessments and psychotherapy to adults struggling with depression, anxiety,  panic attacks, PTSD, chronic pain issues, substance use disorders, trauma/PTSD, and more. Janet is licensed as a psychological associate by the North Carolina Board of Psychology and certified as a health service provider. Janet is also licensed as a clinical addiction specialist with the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board. Janet is a certified trauma professional (CTP) by the International Association of Trauma Professionals. In addition, Janet is a certified provider of Alpha-Stim CES, offering treatment and prescriptions for the FDA cleared device in treating depression, anxiety, insomnia, and pain. Janet has completed EMDRIA-approved training in treating clients with EMDR.  

 

Janet Heuring Larsen is experienced in providing an eclectic blend of psychotherapy that includes cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, psychodynamic therapy, family therapy, existential  therapy, person-centered therapy, and motivational interviewing. Janet has also received specialized training in providing EMDR an evidenced-based treatment for anxiety, phobias, and trauma.  Janet aligns her therapeutic approach to each client based upon their experience, comfort, and goals for therapy.  

 

Janet Heuring Larsen has been active in the field of clinical psychology for years serving in private practice, multiple community clinics, and non-profit organizations. Janet was a former president of the non-profit the North Carolina Association of Professional Psychologists (NCAPP) and continues to serve on the Board advocating for mental health access in our state. She attended NCCU and completed an extensive three-year graduate program focused in clinical psychology where she earned her Masters of Arts.  She graduated with Cum Laude institutional honors and passed the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Board’s Examination for the Professional Practice of Psychology (EPPP) at the doctoral level. Janet completed her clinical psychology internship at Durham County Government where she facilitated the DBT Lift Program and finished her graduate research thesis on clinical addiction screening practices in physicians. She completed her undergraduate education at the University at Albany with a double major in biology and psychology, where she researched the effects of perinatal seizures on seizure susceptibility in the department of Biopsychology. Following graduation, she worked on a research team at Albany Medical Center, exploring the impact of oxidative stress in the development of Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease. Early in her career, Janet co-led the grant funded TeenScreen® Program in five New York state high schools which educated, screened, and referred high school students with depression and suicidal ideations for mental health treatment services. Janet was acknowledged by Greene County school districts in New York State for her efforts to improve students’ mental health and assist with building safer school environments in the community. While living in NY years ago, Janet served in community treatment centers providing counseling and education in treating addiction as a brain disease to help reduce the stigma of substance use problems.

In her free time, Janet enjoys practicing yoga, hiking with her dogs, painting nature scenes, and spending time with her family. She is happily married with two young children.
